Themes of suffering, perseverance, and transformation are central to Clovis Blackwell’s artistic identity. His examination of apocalyptic myths grows out of a childhood fascination with post-apocalyptic sci-fi. He sees the apocalypse not as the end of all things, but as a central metaphor for the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. He understands these myths to be a means of reckoning the passage from one state into another. Images of cave entrances, flowers, and nuclear weapons tests layered in vibrant and colorful intersections aim to generate multiple associations, opening up the appealing possibilities of the transformative, the life in death, the creation in destruction.
