JÄÄNMURTAJA means Icebreaker in Finnish. As a young architect, Bill Bloomfield sat in his bedroom window overlooking the harbor in Helsinki, Finland and gazed at the large ships that were employed to break the ice-covered water in order to provide safe routes of passage for other vessels.  This painting, JÄÄNMURTAJA, evokes the cold Baltic sea and the rational geometries found in Finnish textiles and architecture.

Bill Bloomfield is a painter and architect living in San Francisco. In painting, he finds color inspiration through nature and formal composition through geometry and architecture.
