For more than a decade, Suzy has been mesmerized by the ships she sees from her studio window at Pier 70 in San Francisco. The particular light and weather conditions create an ever-changing scene and shroud and illuminate the ships and water in ways that continue to fascinate her. Sometimes, ghostly and glimmering, sometimes glowing in the full glory of sunlight, the ships are like large transient still lives on a liquid surface, sublime, mysterious, and full of longing.

Industrial, yet romantic, large cargo ships seen from far away are imbued with poetry. The shipping industry carries a mixture of associations that conjure the mind’s eye to think of far away destinations, adventure, trade, and global commerce, as well as the undercurrent of environmental and political troubled water. The ships themselves, however, are proud and formidable nautical beasts of burden, weathering storms, doing their work, and inspiring Suzy in new ways that stretch her way of seeing, challenging her to capture the moment, before they glide away, or disappear in the mist.
