A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Susan has worked as a documentary and fine art photographer in the Bay Area since 1989. She has received several photography awards, including the Grand Prize in a Peninsula Magazine photo contest in 1991 and a Visiting Artist Residency at the American Academy in Rome in 1999. Susan has worked as a staff photographer for the University of California, San Francisco since 2006. She placed in the top 10 in the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions print competition in 2006.

Merrell’s projects range from straight photography: people living on the street and university public relations images, journalism and architecture, to fine art imagery: mixed media nudes, birds captured in flight with infrared film and other alternative shooting, printing and post-production processes.

Her images have appeared in numerous local, national and international news and art publications, including: The Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, NPR, ABC network, Bloomberg, San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury News, Nature, California History Magazine and METRO newspapers. Merrell is currently working on a digital art series, and continues the street photography work started in the late 1980s.
