Artist Statement

Who am I is a driving question into my work and creative process. It is a vision of “who am I” untangling a gritty childhood that I get to turn into art that might not exist in me otherwise if I had an easy upbringing. My childhood is a structure of my identity and my identity is the creator of my art . . .

I do not consider my work to address cultural, social or political issues. I truly let the work flow from more of a spiritual place within me, letting the work unfold more like a fairy tale or poem, art is the playground for my imagination and I am influenced more by what I feel than what I see. I use a variety of materials and processes and I often produce multiple series that can be very different from my last series.

I’ve been an avid surfer, horse enthusiast and a professional photographer for most of my adult life. Recently I have become artistically drawn to the worn and deteriorating elements of weathered wood and the way the grain rhythmically flows like the ocean waves.  The further the decline and decrepit the scrap of lumber I come by, the more interest I find in working my photographs into it. The camera captures the stillness and poetic depth of a moment, but it’s the wood that brings them to life with a nostalgic fluidity.

I digitally shoot the textures in the wood and then the settings and subjects to layer the images in Photoshop. Gradually I blend both together like a painter with a brush, adding and removing various aspects until they become unified within a balanced alignment. I’ve also begun to construct framed mounts and router custom crevices with the planks to further pronounce the wood’s unique and inspiring character.

I truly love being an artist in the Bay Area surrounded by such a talented community of artist that inspires me everyday.
