Rachel Sager is an oil painter living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. She received a BFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia after studying at Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence, Italy. Her work has been featured in many internationally juried shows including Aqua International Art Fair in Miami, FL; Open and Crocker-Kingsley California Biennial; in addition to the Emmy Award-winning documentary, Sketching the Silk Road. In her new series, she is currently focusing on sweeping, explosive landscapes.

Matter is presented in a decomposed state, suspended between earth and sky. Rachel’s exploration of most subjects is visceral, and she draws upon her own intuition to determine the severity of the atmosphere. Her inspiration comes from brush fires, demolition explosions, storm clouds (specifically wall clouds, commonly seen in tornado producing weather) and explosives. She aims to create sweeping, emotionally charged landscapes that convey the dissonance that she experiences in self-expression. Debris filled smoke is juxtaposed by sun filled skies and cirrus clouds, representative of both the turmoil and serenity that make up life’s dual nature.
