For her collages, Rachel Leibman uses small pieces of paper as her palette and “paints” colorful and detailed pictures. She composes the collages from images of ancient manuscripts, totems, murals, and urban graffiti. She prints the images on thin photo paper and then cuts up the printouts. The collages are finished with many layers of acrylic medium and varnish, and then buffed until the surface has a satin-like sheen. Rachel loves the medium of collage because it provides her with a vehicle to present many layers of meaning. It allows her to choose the source materials, as well as the subject matter, in order to impart her point of view.
