Joseph Abbati is a San Francisco-based artist and designer. The donated artwork is part of a series of tapestry portraits he exhibited in a one-man show at Strut entitled Larger Than Life in March 2017. This artwork is informed by Joseph’s interest in image and gender. In the historic tradition of tapestry art, the cloth they become transforms the photographs into modern records that document the contribution of San Francisco drag queens to the LGBT community. He has donated tapestry artwork in the past to Visual Aid and worked with them to create a series of tapestry pillows with artwork from their roster of artists and raise money for their mission to help artists with AIDS. He also worked with Creative Growth in Oakland to create a collection of printed pillows from the artwork of their artists with developmental challenges.
