Nearly 20 years ago, John Kraft found what he considers to be his voice and vocabulary as an artist. With a consistent palette and use of strong color and line, this vocabulary freed John to focus more on the story he wishes to tell and less on the words he uses in the telling of that story. The recurring figures depicted in many of his pieces have also undergone change. In earlier work, his figures were lonely or lost souls fighting against excess and inner conflict, but now they are exclusively celebratory, loving, and joyful.

John created this piece entitled “Love Wins” on the evening of June 26, 2015. This is the day that the United States Supreme Court decided by a 5-to-4 margin that the Constitution’s 14th Amendment recognizes a national right to same-sex marriage.

Following the decision, the phrase “Love Wins” became a frequent refrain in the streets, in the press and on social media. In many regards, John Kraft feels these two words are the perfect summary of the court’s decision and the spirit of that historic day.
