Aaron Terry’s recent body of work uses appropriated media information, culled from online news sources, social media and music, to explore how music and media communicate, and to question the implications of sample-based resources. Low-resolution imagery, various sample and bit rates and small image sources combine to arrive at a wholly new piece. The work questions the way in which today’s culture reads, believes and buys into (or doesn’t) media and pop culture. It references older forms of media and information in the hopes that new narratives or information can be considered in comparative viewing and listening.

Aaron Terry grew up as a kid with no electricity or running water in the woods of upstate New York until fate brought his family to Philadelphia, where he grew into the city as a young adult. Aaron Terry’s work consists of mixed media projects from printmaking to performance, that often depict the “urbanyetti,” an alter ego or hero character.

Terry’s work has been shown in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Philadelphia; Portland, Oregon; and the Bay Area. He lives in the redwood groves of Canyon, CA. He holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and has taught at the California College of the Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute.
